Walk the Cross – Scotland

📅 13th – 14th September 2025
📍 From St Andrew’s Cathedral, Glasgow to Carfin Grotto

Join us for a powerful two-day pilgrimage on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and Our Lady of Sorrows. This 33 km walk — one kilometre for each year that Jesus lived — is a chance to pray, reflect, and walk together in community, finishing at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in Carfin.

Event Schedule

Saturday, 13th September

📍 Meet: 8:30am at St Andrew’s Cathedral, Clyde Street, Glasgow
Start: 9:00am
➡️ Route: Clyde Walkway → Uddingston
🏁 End: Uddingston train station (Day 1 finish)

👉 Tip: Park at Uddingston in the morning and take the train into Glasgow (every 15 mins) so your car is ready when you finish Day 1.

Sunday, 14th September

📍 Meet: 8:30am at Uddingston train station
Start: 9:00am
➡️ Route: Uddingston → Carfin Grotto

✝️ 2:30pm: Eucharistic Procession & Rosary at Carfin
🙏 3:00pm: Adoration in the Glass Chapel with the Divine Mercy Chaplet
🍴 Canteen: Refreshments available
4:15pm: Holy Mass at Carfin Grotto

Non-walkers are warmly invited to join us at Carfin for the Procession, Adoration, Mass, and fellowship.

🚆 A train station opposite Carfin Grotto makes it easy to return to Uddingston or continue onward.

If you’re travelling from outside Glasgow or want to stay overnight:

Near St Andrew’s Cathedral (Glasgow City Centre)

  • Premier Inn Glasgow City Centre (George Square) – budget-friendly, walking distance to the Cathedral.

  • Holiday Inn Express Glasgow Riverside – close to Clyde Street.

  • Motel One Glasgow – modern, next to Glasgow Central Station.

Near Uddingston (end of Day 1)

  • Redstones Hotel – local inn with parking and restaurant.

  • Bothwell Bridge Hotel – comfortable option in nearby Bothwell village.

Near Carfin Grotto (Day 2 finish)

  • Dalziel Park Hotel (Motherwell) – 10 min drive from Carfin, with good facilities.

  • Raven’s Cliff Hotel (Motherwell) – convenient chain option.

Transport

Train options:

  • Day 1: Uddingston ↔ Glasgow Central (regular ScotRail service, ~15 mins).

  • Day 2: Carfin ↔ Uddingston (direct trains, ~10 mins).

Parking:

  • Uddingston train station has parking — ideal if you want your car ready at the end of Day 1.

  • Carfin has parking near the Grotto for Sunday Mass-goers.

Air travel:

  • Nearest airport: Glasgow International (GLA) (25 mins by taxi/train to Glasgow city).

Practical Walking Tips

  • Footwear: Wear broken-in walking shoes/trainers — avoid brand-new shoes.

  • Clothing: Dress in layers; Scotland’s weather can change quickly. Bring a light waterproof jacket.

  • Food & Water: Carry a refillable water bottle and some high-energy snacks. Lunch stops will be flexible.

  • Pace: Walk at a prayerful, steady pace; marshals will guide the group.

  • Visibility: A hi-vis vest or bright jacket is recommended for safety.

  • Rosary/Prayer aids: Bring your rosary and prayer book — we’ll pray as we walk.

  • Health: Carry personal medication and blister plasters; let organisers know if you have health concerns.
